Sonic Frontiers Has Sold Just Shy Of 5 Million Copies

SEGA’s latest financial report reveals mixed results across its gaming portfolio. Sonic Frontiers continues to be a strong performer, having sold 4.94 million copies and poised to surpass the 5 million mark with an upcoming Definitive Edition release. The remaster is expected to add several hundred thousand more sales.

Other Sonic titles also show solid performance: Sonic X Shadow Generations has sold 3.07 million copies, Team Sonic Racing reached 3.5 million, and Sonic Superstars has sold 2.88 million units.

However, SEGA’s report highlights two significant underperformers: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance. Despite critical acclaim—CrossWorlds earned an 82 Metascore while Art of Vengeance achieved 87—both games fell below SEGA’s sales expectations. The report notes that strong critical evaluations did not translate into commercial success. CrossWorlds has sold at least one million copies, though exact figures for both titles remain unreleased, with SEGA lumping them together as underperformers in its official documentation.

This disconnect between critical reception and commercial performance highlights a broader industry challenge: critical success doesn’t always guarantee strong sales. While SEGA’s Sonic franchise continues to deliver commercially successful titles, these recent releases demonstrate that quality reviews alone cannot guarantee meeting business expectations.
