Sega is re-releasing the original Sonic Genesis games on $100 cartridges
Sega and retro gaming company Iam8bit are collaborating to re-release the original Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic 2 as physical cartridges for the classic Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console. Each cartridge is priced at $100 and will ship in Q3 2026.
The releases feature distinctive physical presentation. Sonic the Hedgehog comes packaged in a translucent blue cartridge shell, while Sonic 2 arrives in orange. Iam8bit notes that one in every eight cartridges produced will be special “Chaos Emerald” variant versions, adding collectibility to the release.
Each cartridge includes a full-color instruction booklet with restored original artwork and a new foreword, housed in custom packaging. The cartridges are compatible with NTSC Sega Genesis consoles.
Branded as the 35th Anniversary Legacy Cartridge Collection, this release exemplifies the ongoing market for premium physical retro gaming products, particularly around celebrated franchises and significant anniversaries. The partnership between Sega and Iam8bit—known for producing high-quality physical releases of classic games—reflects a deliberate strategy toward game preservation and appeals to collectors and Genesis-era enthusiasts. Pre-orders are currently available.
