Games Workshop never detailed how the Skitarii’s most iconic weapon reloads, so Fatshark helped model it after a gaming classic

When developing the Skitarii class for Warhammer 40k: Darktide, developer Fatshark encountered a unique challenge: Games Workshop had never specified how the faction’s most iconic weapon actually reloads. The Galvanic Rifle, instantly recognizable to 40k fans, features a striking aesthetic that blends classical flintlock design with science-fiction elements—specifically a glowing blue cylinder mounted beneath its barrel. This fusion of old and new defines the weapon’s visual identity within the Warhammer 40k universe.

Faced with animating the Skitarii’s weapon mechanics for their game, Fatshark needed to determine whether the Galvanic Rifle used a clip system or operated more like a revolver rifle. Rather than inventing something entirely original, the team drew inspiration from a gaming classic to solve this design problem. The creative solution demonstrates how video game developers must sometimes fill gaps left by tabletop lore and design, adding functional details to iconic imagery that fans have long been fascinated by.
