‘Absolutely Terrible Idea’: Nobody Likes Sony’s New PS Plus Experiment
Sony is experimenting with a new game delivery method for PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium subscriptions in the USA, UK, and Japan. Rather than releasing the full monthly lineup of PS5, PS4, and Classic games simultaneously on the same Tuesday, the company is now staggering releases across multiple weeks.
The June 2026 schedule exemplifies this approach, with games launching on different dates: Sonic X Shadow Generations arrived June 10-11, followed by Final Fantasy 16 and Gitaroo Man on June 16, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Life Is Strange: Double Exposure on June 23. In contrast, subscribers in other regions continue to receive the complete lineup in a single drop.
The staggered approach has generated significant negative feedback from subscribers in the affected territories. Industry observers and players have largely criticized the change, with no reported positive reception to the experimental delivery method. The decision represents a departure from the established practice of coordinated, all-at-once game releases that subscribers have come to expect.
This experiment affects only PS Plus Extra and Premium tiers in three specific regions, leaving standard PS Plus service and other territories unimpacted. Sony has not provided detailed justification for the change beyond describing it as an experiment, leaving subscribers unclear about the reasoning behind the new distribution strategy or its potential duration.
