Warframe dev says ’no one is celebrating’ Destiny 2 winding down: ‘A game is healthy when you have competitors’

Despite the competitive rivalry between Warframe and Destiny 2, the developer behind Warframe has expressed sincere disappointment about Bungie’s decision to wind down content updates for Destiny 2. Megan Everett, Warframe’s community director and live ops lead, told Eurogamer that the news is “heartbreaking” and “earth-shattering,” revealing that many in the gaming industry see the loss as genuinely painful rather than opportunistic.

Destiny 2’s servers will remain operational, but Bungie has confirmed that no new content will arrive beyond a major quality of life patch that leaves the game in a stable but static state. This represents the effective end of development for the long-running looter-shooter that has been a cornerstone of the genre.

Rather than viewing this as a competitive advantage, Everett emphasized that “a game is healthy when you have competitors.” She stressed that nobody in the industry is “celebrating” Destiny 2’s decline, because the loss of a major franchise hurts the entire gaming ecosystem. The implicit argument is that competition pushes all games to be better, and losing one of the genre’s most influential titles diminishes the space as a whole.

This sentiment reflects a growing awareness in the gaming industry that collaboration and competition aren’t purely zero-sum. The perspective also hints at broader concerns about live-service game longevity and industry consolidation, as major titles continue to be discontinued or abandoned.
