Sea of Thieves is becoming a live-action movie, the Gears of War film apparently has a plot, and Microsoft’s considering bringing the Halo TV show back

Xbox is expanding its presence in entertainment beyond gaming, with multiple video game adaptations in development. The Rare-developed pirate adventure Sea of Thieves is being adapted into a live-action film, with Marvel filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton producing through his production company Hisako Films. Cretton is known for directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

This adaptation is part of Xbox’s broader strategic vision, as outlined by CEO Asha Sharma, to establish Xbox as a major entertainment company beyond gaming. The move capitalizes on the recent critical and commercial success of video game film adaptations.

Additionally, fresh plot details have emerged for the Netflix live-action adaptation of Gears of War, and Microsoft is considering reviving the Halo TV series or developing additional Halo content. According to Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty, the challenge of adapting Sea of Thieves lies in the game’s nature—where the player and community are the primary characters—presenting unique narrative opportunities for the film adaptation.

The announcements reflect a broader trend of major gaming companies seeking to expand their intellectual properties into film and television as a means of building franchises and reaching wider audiences.
