GTA 6 May Be Borrowing a Major Mechanic from Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar Games has revealed gameplay details for Grand Theft Auto 6 showing the studio is adopting key mechanics from Red Dead Redemption 2. The most significant change is a chapter-based story structure, confirmed through the game’s Ultimate Edition bonuses which will unlock progressively through protagonist Jason and Lucia’s story rather than being available from the start.
Additionally, GTA 6 will feature a weapons loadout system similar to RDR2’s approach, limiting players’ carrying capacity. Rather than storing unlimited weapons, players will have access to a weapons locker in a dedicated garage where they can customize their loadout based on missions and situations. This constraint encourages more intentional weapon selection, mirroring RDR2’s two-large-weapons-plus-two-handguns limitation.
The chapter-based progression system applies to all Ultimate Edition content, including vehicles, weapons, safehouses, and sidequests. The Ultimate Edition costs $100 compared to the standard edition’s $79.99 price point. These mechanics represent a departure from traditional GTA’s approach and signal Rockstar’s continued evolution of open-world design philosophy, incorporating narrative structure elements that worked well in Red Dead Redemption 2. The game launches November 19, 2026.
