Micron CEO Expects RAM Shortage to Last Through 2027, Start to Ease in 2028

Micron, a leading global memory manufacturer, projects that the ongoing RAM shortage will extend through 2027, with conditions beginning to improve in 2028. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra made this announcement during the company’s Q3 2026 earnings report, citing unprecedented demand from AI applications combined with structural limitations in semiconductor supply.

The shortage affects multiple components critical to computing hardware, including RAM, VRAM used in graphics cards, and SSDs. While the semiconductor industry has been grappling with supply constraints for years, the explosive growth in AI adoption has significantly exacerbated the situation.

According to Mehrotra, “We expect tight conditions to persist beyond calendar 2027 as a result of AI-driven demand across all segments coupled with structural supply constraints.” This projection suggests that manufacturers will continue struggling to meet demand in the near term.

The extended shortage has implications for consumers across multiple platforms and devices, with particular impact on PC gaming hardware availability and pricing for graphics cards and memory components.
