Sonic Returns To His Roots With New Sega Genesis Cartridges
Sega and collectibles company iam8bit have partnered to release new ‘Legacy Cartridges’ versions of the classic Sonic the Hedgehog titles for the Sega Genesis. Priced at $99.99 each, the re-released cartridges for both the original Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 feature translucent shells packaged in nostalgic clamshell-style boxes with complete instruction manuals.
The cartridges offer a distinctive collectible twist: one in every eight units will feature ‘Chaos Emerald energy,’ a special effect that causes the shell to glow when the console is powered on. The standard translucent cartridges maintain the classic Genesis aesthetic while the glow-in-the-dark variants add a unique visual element for collectors seeking special editions.
A notable limitation applies to the release: the Legacy Cartridges are designed exclusively for NTSC-region Sega Genesis consoles. Owners of the PAL-region Mega Drive variants will not be able to play these games, confining the availability to North American and Japanese markets. This regional restriction highlights the collector-focused nature of the product, targeting enthusiast audiences rather than a broader market release.
