Tekken Is Coming To Switch 2, But Not The One You Think

The original arcade version of Tekken is coming to modern consoles this week through Hamster Corporation’s Arcade Archives 2 series. Available June 25, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, this release brings Namco’s landmark 1994 fighting game to contemporary platforms.

The original Tekken debuted in arcades in December 1994 as one of the first titles to run on Namco’s System 11 arcade board, which was built on prototype PlayStation hardware. The game features 3D fighting gameplay where competitors with hidden agendas battle in “The Tekken Tournament” to prove their fighting supremacy through a revolutionary control scheme.

Rather than a basic emulation, this re-release includes modern quality-of-life features that make the classic more accessible. These additions include customizable difficulty and display settings, full button remapping, rapid-fire options, the ability to create multiple save files at any time, and a rewind function to undo player mistakes. The release also introduces new modes, including Time Attack, expanding beyond the original arcade offering.

This announcement comes after speculation that Tekken 8 would arrive on Switch 2 post-launch. While that didn’t materialize, this classic re-release provides fighting game enthusiasts an opportunity to experience the franchise’s origins on the new Nintendo hardware. The release is handled by Hamster Corporation in partnership with Bandai Namco Entertainment, ensuring proper licensing and preservation of the seminal 3D fighting game that defined the genre for decades to come.
