Bill Gates says AI may replace a lot of jobs, but it will never replace athletes because no one wants to watch computers play
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has weighed in on the ongoing debate about artificial intelligence’s impact on employment, arguing that certain professions will remain insulated from AI disruption. According to Gates, athletes represent a sector fundamentally protected from replacement because audiences have no interest in watching computers compete.
Beyond professional sports, Gates identified additional roles he believes are safe from AI automation, including biologists, energy workers, and software coders. His remarks come amid growing industry speculation about AI’s potential to reshape the job market. Last year, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei raised concerns that AI could eliminate up to 50% of entry-level white-collar positions, potentially creating barriers for Gen Z workforce entry.
The commentary also references Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman’s earlier statement suggesting AI could eliminate white-collar jobs within 18 months—a claim Suleyman later clarified had been misrepresented. As generative AI continues embedding itself into workplace processes, automating routine and repetitive tasks, the question of job security remains contentious across sectors and skill levels.
