Bungie Developers Once Pushed for a Destiny Dating Sim
During a period of significant change for Bungie—as the studio ceased support for Destiny 2 and moved away from developing future mainline entries—internal reports have surfaced about an unconventional prototype project that never came to fruition.
Two Bungie developers revealed that a Destiny Dating Sim had been pitched internally but was swiftly rejected by leadership. Liana Ruppert, a developer who worked on Destiny 2, disclosed that the prototype was inspired by Dream Daddy, the popular indie dating simulation game. However, the project faced what Ruppert described as a “very Hard No” from company decision-makers, who felt that “nobody wanted romance or silliness” in the Destiny franchise.
The revelation comes during a notable time for Bungie, as the studio has recently announced its pivot away from live-service development and its decision not to pursue a new mainline Destiny title. The dating sim prototype represents one of the creative ideas explored internally that did not align with the studio’s perceived vision for the franchise.
