VR dev Combat Waffle Studios lays off staff

Combat Waffle Studios, the developer behind the VR shooter Ghosts of Tabor, has announced significant staff layoffs. The decision was disclosed via LinkedIn post by CEO, creative director, and founder Scott Albright, who described it as a “difficult decision” to reduce the team’s size.

The layoffs stem directly from the cancellation of a major project that the studio was developing in partnership with a large unnamed company. Albright did not provide specific details about the cancelled project or the number of affected employees, though he acknowledged departing staff as “talented individuals who have contributed meaningfully to our work.”

In his announcement, Albright emphasized the studio’s commitment to supporting affected employees during their transition to new opportunities, noting that “any studio would be fortunate to have them.” This measured tone suggests an attempt to maintain positive industry relationships while handling an economically challenging situation.

Despite the setback, Combat Waffle Studios maintains confidence in the long-term viability of VR as a platform and their continued place within it. The announcement reflects broader challenges facing VR game developers, where project economics and partnership dynamics have proven volatile. Independent and mid-size studios particularly struggle with the capital requirements and market risks inherent in VR development.
