Neflix’s Ghostbusters: Night Shift connects the ’80s films to Afterlife
Directors Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman are expanding the Ghostbusters universe with a new Netflix animated series titled Ghostbusters: Night Shift. The show is set in 1994 New York City and will serve as a narrative bridge between the original 1984-1989 Ghostbusters films and the modern Afterlife/Frozen Empire continuity.
Kenan and Reitman, who previously collaborated on Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024), expressed their creative motivation for the project during an interview at Annecy Festival. “We became very curious about the mystery of the 1990s and ghostbusting,” Kenan explained, noting that the decades-long gap in the franchise’s timeline presented an opportunity to explore untold stories.
The show will address narrative elements introduced in Afterlife, where the character Ray provides context about the original Ghostbusters team—revealing that they had gone their separate ways after the events of the original films. Rather than leaving this period unexplored, the creators saw an opportunity to develop what Kenan described as “not just a big story to tell, but a lost part of the legend of ghostbusting.”
Ghostbusters: Night Shift represents a continuation of the filmmakers’ efforts to extend the franchise’s mythos while maintaining continuity with established lore. The animated format allows for creative storytelling possibilities that differ from the live-action films. As the show will explain what happened during the 1990s ghostbusting era, it aims to provide fans with a more complete understanding of the franchise’s timeline and character development during this crucial transitional period.
