Online retailers are stating that PS5 GTA 6 codes can only be played in the country they’re bought
Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders are now live, but with a significant change to physical editions: the boxed version will contain only a download code instead of a disc. This decision marks a notable shift for a flagship AAA title typically sold through retail channels.
The physical and digital versions of GTA 6 are priced identically, and the included code is single-use only, locking the game permanently to the player’s account. This eliminates the possibility of reselling used copies—a traditional benefit of physical game ownership. Additionally, online retailers have announced that PS5 and Xbox codes come with regional restrictions, meaning codes purchased in one country cannot be redeemed in another.
Industry experts point to several reasons for this unconventional approach. Rockstar Games, known as “the most leak-averse studio in the industry,” likely uses the no-disc format to prevent early copies from leaking before launch. The strategy also allows for better price control across regions and eliminates the second-hand market that could cannibalize new sales.
While digital games have increasingly dominated the market in recent years, GTA 6’s omission of a disc is unusual for such a mass-market title. Traditionally, flagship franchises like GTA, Call of Duty, and FIFA have maintained physical disc releases due to their broad appeal and presence in retail stores and supermarkets.
Analysts acknowledge the decision may frustrate some players but argue it “commercially makes sense” for publishers. However, the move raises broader questions about digital game ownership rights, game preservation, and consumer choice in an increasingly digital landscape.
