Micron says chip shortage will “improve gradually” in 2028

Micron Technologies CEO Sanjay Mehrotra announced that the ongoing global shortage of RAM and NAND memory chips, driven by surging demand from artificial intelligence applications, will persist through 2027 before showing gradual improvement in 2028. During the company’s Q3 2026 earnings call with investors, Mehrotra acknowledged that while conditions are expected to improve in 2028, Micron currently lacks visibility into when memory supply will finally catch up with rapidly increasing demand across the market.

The resolution of the chip shortage depends significantly on the expansion and development of new greenfield chip manufacturing facilities—large-scale fabrication plants constructed on previously undeveloped land. These infrastructure projects require substantial capital investment and considerable time to complete and reach full production capacity. The multi-year timeline indicates that semiconductor supply constraints will remain a significant factor affecting industries dependent on memory chips, including consumer electronics and gaming hardware, well into 2028 and potentially beyond.
