Magic: The Gathering Arena developers have successfully unionized

Magic: The Gathering Arena developers have successfully unionized following a National Labour Relations Board (NLRB) vote. The group, organizing under the Communications Workers of America (CWA) banner as United Wizards of the Coast-CWA (UWOTC-CWA), sought union recognition to address workplace concerns at Wizards of the Coast and parent company Hasbro.

The unionization effort centered on key demands including assurances around the use of generative AI in development, protections against layoffs, and greater transparency in compensation structures. Workers initially requested that Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro voluntarily recognize the union, but both companies declined. Reports indicated that management at Wizards of the Coast actively worked to discourage unionization efforts among employees.

The successful NLRB vote marks a significant win for the developers involved. This unionization reflects broader industry tensions around job security, fair compensation, and the integration of AI tools in game development—issues that have prompted similar organizing efforts across the gaming sector.
