The next Shrek movie is coming a year after Shrek 5 apparently
DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures have announced Shrek 5, the fifth installment in the animated franchise, set to release on June 30, 2027—17 years after Shrek Forever After (2010). The long-delayed sequel marks one of the longest gaps between mainline entries in the series, with production having begun in 2024.
Universal Pictures has also announced Donkey, a spinoff film arriving in 2028 that will focus on Eddie Murphy’s beloved sidekick character. The spinoff is being directed by Charlie Bean, known for The Lego Batman Movie and the live-action adaptation of Lady and the Tramp. Eddie Murphy previously teased the spinoff during press appearances in 2025 while promoting The Pickup.
The announcement marks the first major public confirmation of development timelines after the official teaser release in 2026. The consecutive 2027 and 2028 release dates suggest DreamWorks intends to capitalize on franchise momentum with back-to-back theatrical releases, expanding the Shrek universe beyond its original films.
