Japan’s discounted PS5 is a strategic investment, says Sony CEO Hideaki Nishino
Sony Interactive Entertainment is employing a pricing strategy in Japan with the introduction of a region-locked PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, announced in November 2025. The console is priced at ¥55,000 (approximately $340), representing a significant discount compared to standard market pricing.
The strategic move comes as Sony has recently increased console prices across other regions, with the standard region-free PS5 Digital Edition now retailing at ¥89,980 ($555) in Japan. This pricing structure means the Japan-exclusive version is roughly 40% cheaper than its unrestricted counterpart, a substantial difference that highlights the deliberate nature of the discount.
According to Hideaki Nishino, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, the company is intentionally selling this Japan-specific model at a loss. Despite the short-term financial impact, the company views this as a strategic investment aimed at expanding and growing the PlayStation 5 audience within the Japanese market.
The region-locked nature of the discounted console means it cannot be purchased outside Japan or used with games from other regions, limiting its appeal to international buyers while protecting Sony’s pricing structure in other markets. This approach allows Sony to address specific market conditions in Japan while maintaining premium pricing elsewhere.
The initiative reflects Sony’s commitment to competing effectively in the Japanese gaming market, where console competition remains fierce. By sacrificing margin on individual unit sales, the company is betting that increased market penetration will generate higher long-term revenue through software sales and PlayStation Network subscriptions.
