There’s a surprising amount of major games you can’t play on Valve’s Steam Machine - here are eight of the biggest, and why

Valve’s Steam Machine, launching this year as a major hardware platform, faces a notable constraint: it cannot run a significant number of the gaming industry’s biggest titles. However, this limitation does not stem from the hardware’s capabilities—the Steam Machine is powerful enough to run these games.

Instead, the issue stems from a software limitation. The Steam Machine runs SteamOS, Valve’s custom Linux operating system, which is the same foundation used by the Steam Deck. While SteamOS has substantially improved Linux gaming viability, many major games were developed exclusively for Windows and console platforms, creating compatibility barriers on Linux-based systems.

The article identifies at least eight major games currently unplayable on the Steam Machine despite being well within its hardware specifications. This incompatibility presents a significant challenge for market adoption, as consumers may be reluctant to purchase hardware unable to play titles from major franchises.

The disparity underscores a persistent challenge in the gaming industry: the dominance of Windows and proprietary console ecosystems versus open platforms like Linux. For the Steam Machine to function as a genuine replacement for existing gaming hardware, Valve must either secure developer partnerships to enhance compatibility or develop technical solutions that bridge the gap between SteamOS and Windows-exclusive titles.
