1 year after launch, spaceship shooter Wildgate will end development after its next update

Wildgate, the PvPvE spaceship shooter developed by Moonshot Games under the leadership of former StarCraft 2 lead designer Dustin Browder, will end active development following its next update scheduled for next month. Despite efforts to attract a wider player base over its first year, the game has not gathered sufficient audience size to sustain ongoing development, according to a Steam announcement from game director Browder.

The end of development marks a shift to maintenance mode rather than a complete shutdown. The game will remain available for purchase across all platforms and will continue to receive periodic updates focused on bug fixes, balance adjustments, and small events that reuse existing content. This arrangement represents a softer sunset than many live-service games experience—Wildgate will not be taken offline, and the team at Moonshot Games will not face layoffs as a result of the decision.

The move reflects the harsh realities of the live-service gaming landscape, where even titles from experienced industry veterans can struggle to build sustainable communities. However, Moonshot Games has been transparent about its plans to preserve the game for existing players while accepting that the intensive development cycle has become untenable.
