Looks like there’s no firm favourite for 2026’s GOTY just yet, though there are two standouts

As the video game industry crosses the halfway point of 2026, no clear frontrunner has emerged for Game of the Year. Despite a prolific year of releases across multiple scales and genres, the gaming community remains divided on standout titles.

PC Gamer’s reader poll this month revealed fragmented preferences, with disparate choices emerging across the survey. Notably, 29% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the available options, suggesting that either an exceptional standout has yet to arrive or their preferred game was not represented in the survey.

The year has produced a mix of breakout successes and expected blockbuster performances. Indie and mid-tier titles like Mixtape and Lego Batman have captured unexpected enthusiasm, while major AAA releases such as Crimson Desert have delivered conventional commercial success. This diversity of winners across different market segments has prevented any single title from consolidating support among players.

With half the year remaining, the GOTY conversation remains fluid and open to new contenders. Additional major releases throughout the rest of 2026 could potentially reshape the discussion and eventually yield a clearer consensus among voters and critics.
