True Scale of Bungie Layoffs Revealed, With Nearly 300 Cut From Its Bellevue, Washington Headquarters Alone
Bungie, the studio behind Destiny 2, has undertaken significant layoffs affecting nearly 300 staff members at its Bellevue, Washington headquarters. According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice filed by parent company Sony to the Washington State Employment Security Department, 292 employees will be separated effective July 9, 2026.
The layoffs follow Bungie’s announcement that it would end support for Destiny 2, the live-service multiplayer game that has been central to the studio’s operations since 2014. Sony confirmed the cuts would impact “most” of the Destiny 2 development team and “some” members of the Marathon team, Bungie’s new live-service project in development.
The WARN notice reveals only the scale of cuts at Bungie’s Washington state office and does not account for layoffs affecting staff at other locations. The exact total number of affected employees across all of Bungie’s operations remains unknown, as does the size of the remaining workforce.
The decision reflects broader challenges in the live-service gaming sector, where Destiny 2’s revenue failed to meet expectations despite its established player base and over a decade of post-launch support. The game’s conclusion marks a significant shift for Bungie, which must now focus resources on Marathon and navigate its future direction under Sony ownership.
