Haunted Chocolatier’s Long Development Comes Down To Chasing Perfection

Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone has provided another development update on Haunted Chocolatier, his long-awaited follow-up to the massively successful indie game Stardew Valley. First announced in 2021 (with development beginning around 2020), the action-RPG life sim—where players run a sweetshop in a ghostly realm—has become known for its extended development timeline, now stretching five years from announcement.

In a recent blog post titled “Still here, still grinding…,” Barone acknowledged the lengthy development cycle while emphasizing his perfectionist approach. “I know it’s taking a long time. A big part of that is that I am being very thoughtful about every aspect of the game,” he wrote. He stressed that frequently-used game elements must be “seamless, clear, intuitive, satisfying, aesthetic”—in essence, perfect.

Barone’s extended focus on Stardew Valley, which continues to receive updates and remains phenomenally popular, has contributed to slower progress on Haunted Chocolatier. The developer has reiterated that elements like the recipe book interface consume significant iteration time. “To me, it’s not a simple task, as I torture myself over every last detail,” Barone explained, noting he’s cycled through multiple versions of systems to bring them closer to their final form.

The developer has also chosen not to share mid-development screenshots, comparing premature reveals to “serving half-baked bread.” While Barone acknowledges the frustration fans experience with the lack of updates, he remains committed to his vision, offering no release date or timeline. The extended development reflects his commitment to quality over speed, a philosophy that defined Stardew Valley’s success.
