GTA 6 is the first PS5 game to get the royal treatment from Sony

Sony is launching an unprecedented marketing campaign for Grand Theft Auto 6, marking the most aggressive promotion the company has ever extended to a third-party game. Beginning in early May, Sony reached out to PlayStation 4 users with emails encouraging them to upgrade to PS5 ahead of GTA 6’s November release. This campaign represents a significant departure from Sony’s typical marketing practices, demonstrating support comparable to or exceeding that given to many of its own first-party titles.

The marketing push includes visible changes throughout the PlayStation ecosystem. Sony has rebranded the PlayStation App icon to match GTA 6’s distinctive color scheme and branding. Most prominently, PS5 owners are greeted with full-screen animations of the GTA 6 logo upon logging into their consoles—a level of promotional integration typically reserved for major system updates or Sony’s exclusive releases.

This campaign underscores the cultural and commercial significance of GTA 6 to the PlayStation 5 platform. By treating Rockstar Games’ open-world adventure with platform-level support usually reserved for Sony Interactive Entertainment’s own franchises, the company signals its commitment to making GTA 6 a defining title for the console generation. The strategy reflects both the game’s anticipated commercial success and its potential to drive hardware sales.
