Switch 2 is the second fastest-selling console in US history, as PlayStation records its worst May in decades - and Xbox its worst May ever
The Nintendo Switch 2 has achieved a major milestone, becoming the second fastest-selling gaming console in US history after just 12 months on the market. According to Circana’s May 2026 report, the console sold 5.9 million units in the US during its launch year, surpassed only by Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance, which sold 6.5 million units in its first 12 months 25 years ago.
The Switch 2’s strong performance significantly boosted the overall gaming hardware market in May, with the console leading sales ahead of the PlayStation 5. This momentum contributed to year-on-year hardware spending increasing by more than a third, offsetting weakness in other categories.
The story stands in stark contrast to the struggles faced by other console manufacturers. PlayStation 5 recorded its worst May in 25 years, while Xbox experienced its worst May in recorded history. These declines highlight a significant shift in the competitive console landscape, with Nintendo’s hybrid device commanding market dominance.
Globally, the Switch 2 has already shipped nearly 20 million units, demonstrating strong international appeal. However, Nintendo has indicated that sales growth will likely moderate in the console’s second year, noting that Switch 2 sales were more concentrated in the launch year compared to previous hardware systems. Additionally, Nintendo announced plans to increase the Switch 2’s price by $50, which may impact future sales momentum.
