Valve’s HDMI 2.1 Saga Is “Fully Resolved” with a Final FRL Update to Come For Full 4K 240Hz support
Valve has resolved its HDMI 2.1 implementation issues on Steam Machine, according to SteamOS architect Pierre-Loup Griffais. Although the hardware’s HDMI port is labeled as HDMI 2.0, the system has always been capable of supporting HDMI 2.1 features. The delay in enabling full functionality stemmed from the need to develop proper Linux driver support for HDMI 2.1 on AMD graphics cards, which power Steam Machine.
Valve partnered with AMD to address the technical hurdles, and that collaborative effort is now complete. The current software stack running on Steam Machine includes HDMI 2.1 Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support across both FreeSync and HDMI Forum VRR displays, enhancing compatibility with modern gaming monitors.
Further improvements are planned with an upcoming Fixed Rate Link (FRL) update that will enable full 4K 240Hz support, representing the complete realization of the hardware’s display capabilities.
