GTA 6 has no plans for a post-launch physical release, “not at launch, and not months later”, insists new report

Grand Theft Auto 6 will not receive a physical disc release at launch or in the months following its release later this year, according to new reports from The Hollywood Reporter and multiple gaming outlets. While Rockstar Games has confirmed the game will launch with a physical case containing only a download code, earlier claims suggested a proper disc-based version would arrive by December 2026. However, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed through sources with knowledge of Rockstar’s plans that these reports misinterpreted an internal Rockstar support email.

The confusion stems from a customer service response stating players would “be able to acquire a physical copy during the following months.” This language refers to the download code becoming available in physical retail locations, not an actual disc release. Rockstar currently has “no plans” to print physical discs for GTA 6 at any point, according to confirmed sources. The company has not publicly explained its decision, though industry observers speculate it aims to prevent street-date leaks that could occur if retailers received physical media ahead of launch.

The clarification ends speculation that spread through viral social media posts and articles misinterpreting the Rockstar email. This decision disappoints collectors and fans who prefer physical media ownership, representing another milestone in gaming’s ongoing shift toward digital distribution as the standard release method for major titles.
