Indie developers got tired of waiting for a new Star Fox, so they’re making their own
Despite Star Fox’s absence from Nintendo’s release schedule for nearly a decade, the franchise’s devoted fanbase isn’t waiting idle. Indie developers are channeling their nostalgia for the series—particularly Star Fox 64 from 1997—by creating their own Star Fox-inspired games to fill the void left by Nintendo’s inattention to the IP.
While Nintendo has recently attempted to revitalize the franchise through a Star Fox remake on the Switch 2, this effort comes significantly late. The last original Star Fox game, Star Fox Zero, released on the Wii U over a decade ago. Rather than accept this drought, smaller independent studios are barrel-rolling into action, leveraging the enduring appeal of the series and the community’s hunger for new content.
The move represents a broader trend in gaming where fan passion and creative talent can fill gaps left by major publishers. With emulation and re-releases like Star Fox 64 on Nintendo Switch Online keeping the classics accessible, a new generation of developers has been inspired to carry the torch forward. The indie game community’s response demonstrates that when beloved franchises lie dormant, passionate creators will step in to continue their legacy.
