Riot delays ’last hit indicators’ in League of Legends ranked mode after fan response: ‘We want to get more data and feedback’
Riot Games has delayed the rollout of “last hit indicators” in League of Legends’ ranked mode following community feedback, though the feature remains available in other modes. The indicators will stay enabled but disabled by default in swiftplay, co-op versus AI, and normal draft modes, as Riot seeks additional data and player feedback before introducing them to ranked play.
Last hitting—landing the killing blow on an enemy minion to earn gold—is a fundamental MOBA skill that new players find notoriously difficult to master. Riot’s last hit indicators were designed to help newer players learn this crucial mechanic by showing a visual threshold indicating when a minion is about to die. While the feature addresses a real learning curve problem, the community’s response prompted Riot to reconsider the ranked implementation.
The decision reflects the ongoing tension in game design between accessibility for new players and maintaining competitive integrity for experienced players. Ranked mode serves as the competitive backbone of League of Legends, with many players concerned that indicators could fundamentally alter the skill expression required at higher levels of play. By keeping the feature available but off by default in casual modes, Riot is collecting data on how it affects player learning and progression while preserving ranked mode’s current skill requirements.
This approach allows Riot to gather concrete usage metrics and community sentiment before making a final decision on ranked integration, balancing the goal of lower barrier to entry with the needs of the competitive community.
