PS5 Dominates Xbox for Single Player Games, New Data Suggests
PlayStation 5 continues to demonstrate a significant sales advantage over Xbox Series X|S in the AAA single-player game market, according to data shared by Chris Dring, editor of The Game Business. Analysis of global sales figures reveals that single-player titles achieve approximately 75-80% of their launch window sales on PS5 compared to Xbox platforms.
This disparity, while substantial, reflects the dramatic difference in installed user bases between the two consoles. The PS5 has reached over 93 million units sold worldwide, establishing a commanding market position. In contrast, Xbox Series X|S installations are estimated at approximately 35 million units—significantly smaller, but still representing a substantial player base for Microsoft’s current-generation hardware.
The data suggests that developers and publishers continue to find the PS5’s larger player population an attractive market for single-player experiences, particularly for major AAA releases at launch. This trend underscores the importance of install base as a primary factor in determining initial sales performance for console launches.
