MMO legend Raph Koster is countering World of Warcraft with Stars Reach, his dream project
Veteran MMO designer Raph Koster is developing Stars Reach, an ambitious new MMO he describes as the game he has wanted to make for 30 years. Koster, renowned for his work on Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies, is positioning the project as a direct competitor to World of Warcraft.
The game’s defining feature is its advanced environmental simulation system. Every cubic meter of terrain across all planets contains detailed properties including temperature, humidity, geology, and hundreds of material attributes. Weather systems are fully dynamic—rain falls and pools realistically, rivers carve natural paths through landscapes, lakes freeze seasonally, and forests can burn. Vegetation spreads organically across terrain.
Player interaction with the environment is remarkably deep. Rather than static worlds, Stars Reach allows players to fundamentally reshape planets through their actions. They can melt stone into lava, cool it into new rock formations, and trigger complex chain reactions. Mining operations can cause cave ceilings to collapse. Player choices carry real environmental consequences, making ecological disaster a genuine risk from unintended interactions.
During a recent tour, Koster prioritized demonstrating the weather and environmental systems over traditional MMO elements like combat, indicating these systems are central to the game’s design philosophy. The emphasis on environmental simulation and player-driven world transformation represents a significant departure from conventional MMO design, where environments typically remain largely static regardless of player activity.
