X-Men: The Animated Series original director reveals why Cable is so different in X-Men ‘97 season 2

The original director of X-Men: The Animated Series is revealing how Cable’s characterization differs in the new X-Men ‘97 series. Larry Houston, who directed all 76 episodes of the original 1990s run and now serves as an executive producer on the sequel, told Polygon that the original creators had surprisingly limited knowledge of Cable’s backstory during the show’s initial development.

“Back then, the only thing we knew about Cable was that he had a son named Tyler,” Houston explained. This knowledge gap reflected the reality of the time—Cable was a relatively new character in comics, having debuted in 1986 as written by Chris Claremont. As the infant son of Cyclops (Scott Summers), his fuller history and complex narrative had not yet been established in the source material.

With X-Men ‘97’s second season focusing on Cable, Houston and the current creative team now have access to decades of comic book development and backstory unavailable during the original series’ 1990s production. This comprehensive understanding of Cable’s character—including his role as a time-traveling soldier, complex relationships, and broader X-Men mythology—enables a more nuanced and accurate portrayal.

The contrast illustrates how animated adaptations of comic properties have evolved, with creators now able to draw from substantially richer source material and more fully realized character histories than were available during the original animated series era.
