Activision Promotes Call Of Duty: MW4 By Telling You It’s Not On Game Pass

For the first time in two years, the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will not launch on Xbox Game Pass. Activision is promoting this absence through a new advertising campaign that explicitly states “Not on Xbox Game Pass this year,” positioning the paid purchase requirement as a central message to consumers.

The shift represents a significant departure from the franchise’s recent trajectory. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (2024) and Black Ops 7 (2025) both launched day-one on Game Pass, establishing player expectations for subscription access. However, Microsoft announced earlier this year that future Call of Duty titles would no longer debut in the service.

The decision provided financial justification across Microsoft’s Xbox ecosystem: the company was able to reduce Game Pass pricing following the Call of Duty exclusion, marking a competitive move under new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. By removing the franchise’s day-one subscription availability, Microsoft improved the service’s financial performance while supporting full-price retail sales.

Activision’s advertising strategy stands out as unconventional. Rather than downplaying the exclusivity or emphasizing alternative selling points, the campaign makes the lack of Game Pass availability a primary marketing message. The ads invite players to “lock in” early campaign access through preorder while prominently disclaiming subscription access—an approach that has drawn industry attention as an unusual way to frame a game’s availability.
