DF Weekly: The GTA 6 60fps Debate Returns: Is There a Route Forward on Current-Gen Consoles Like Series X, PS5 or PS5 Pro?

Grand Theft Auto 6’s frame rate capability on current-generation consoles continues to fuel debate among the gaming community. Recent retailer listings have suggested the game may include a 60fps performance mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X, but technical experts remain highly skeptical of these claims.

Digital Foundry, a respected tech analysis outlet, has examined available footage—including recently released screenshots and video clips—and found no evidence supporting a 60fps mode on any current-gen platform, including the PS5 Pro. The studio argues that GTA 6’s technical demands make such performance unlikely. The game prioritizes simulation-heavy mechanics, features extensive ray-tracing effects, and is set within a massive open world, all of which significantly stress hardware resources.

The debate has persisted since March 2024, with no official confirmation from Rockstar Games regarding performance targets. While developers typically offer both quality and performance modes in modern AAA titles, GTA 6’s unprecedented scale and ambition appear to exceed what current consoles can handle at 60fps. Some technical analysts suggest a 40fps mode optimized for 120Hz displays might represent a more realistic middle ground, though this too remains speculation.

As GTA 6 approaches its release, the absence of official performance specifications from Rockstar leaves players uncertain about what to expect. The question of whether current-gen consoles can deliver anything beyond a standard performance mode remains one of gaming’s most contentious ongoing debates.
