Hideki Kamiya thinks there should be a cozy Resident Evil game, where ‘retired Leon goes fishing in the countryside’

Hideki Kamiya, the legendary director of Resident Evil 2, has joked about creating a completely different type of Resident Evil game—a cozy, slice-of-life experience. Rather than returning to horror, Kamiya has previously expressed a desire for a “non-scary mode” in Resident Evil games. In a post on X, when asked about continuing the stories of grown-up characters Leon and Claire, Kamiya humorously suggested the game would feature retired Leon fishing in the countryside, foraging for wild vegetables, baking bread, walking his dog, and tending a garden. While Kamiya isn’t interested in actually returning to the Resident Evil series—having instead pioneered major franchises like Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, Okami, and Bayonetta after his RE work—he expressed he’d at least like to play such a game if someone else made it. The comments arrive as Resident Evil Requiem has become one of 2026’s best-selling and best-reviewed games, sending protagonist Leon through horrors including hospital zombies and bus-sized arachnids.
