Star Wars Reylo fanfiction turned hit rom-com gets Prime Video premiere

The Love Hypothesis, a romantic comedy novel by Ali Hazelwood, is coming to Prime Video, marking another milestone in the growing trend of fan fiction being adapted into mainstream published works and media.

The novel originated as a Star Wars fan fiction story titled “Head over Feet” posted on Archive of Our Own, where Hazelwood wrote under the pen name Ever-so-Reylo (a reference to the Rey and Kylo Ren romantic pairing from recent Star Wars films). The book has since been revised and published as an original work.

This development exemplifies an increasingly visible pipeline from fan fiction communities to commercial publication and adaptation. Other notable examples include Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry, which began as Stucky (Steve and Bucky from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe) fan fiction before being revised and published, and E.L. James’ bestselling 50 Shades of Grey, which originated as Twilight fan fiction exploring the romance between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen.

The phenomenon reflects how fan fiction communities serve as creative incubators where writers develop their craft while exploring themes and character relationships that resonate with audiences. As these adaptations gain mainstream recognition and commercial success, the stigma around fan fiction’s role in literary development continues to diminish. Publishers and streaming platforms are increasingly recognizing the existing fan bases and proven audience appeal of these stories, making the transition from fan fiction to major media productions a more straightforward business model.
