Naughty Dog Chose The Last of Us Remake Over Uncharted Remake, It’s Claimed
According to reports from YouTuber Michael Kemp on the Sacred Symbols podcast, Naughty Dog and Sony considered remaking the original Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune for PlayStation 5 before ultimately choosing to develop a remake of The Last of Us instead.
The Uncharted franchise has remained dormant for years since the last mainline entry, leaving fans without new content in the series. A remake of the original game would have brought the beloved treasure-hunting adventure to current-generation hardware. However, the studio opted to prioritize The Last of Us, choosing to remake that franchise for PS5.
This decision comes as Sony and Naughty Dog have faced ongoing criticism over their heavy focus on The Last of Us franchise in recent years. The choice to remake The Last of Us rather than revive Uncharted suggests the publisher views the post-apocalyptic series as the higher priority for current-generation development resources.
Kemp, who recently published detailed analysis of Amy Hennig’s original vision for Uncharted 4, shared these claims during podcast discussion. Speculation about an Uncharted remake has circulated since at least 2018, indicating the project was under consideration for several years before the decision was ultimately made to pursue The Last of Us instead.
The decision underscores ongoing questions about Naughty Dog’s development priorities and resource allocation between its two flagship franchises. While fans continue to wait for new Uncharted content, the studio remains focused on The Last of Us franchise.
