Planescape: Torment 2 was greenlit by Wizards of the Coast, ’they were really into what we were doing’, but it refused to fund the sequel, and nobody else was interested

Beamdog and veteran BioWare writer David Gaider pitched a sequel to the classic isometric RPG Planescape: Torment, titled Planescape: Unraveled, to Wizards of the Coast. The pitch was well-received in initial meetings, with the publisher demonstrating genuine enthusiasm for the project’s vision. Despite this positive reception and apparent greenlight approval, Wizards of the Coast ultimately refused to fund the sequel’s development. Without backing from the major publisher, the project failed to secure alternative funding and was shelved.

Planescape: Torment stands as one of the greatest Dungeons & Dragons video games ever created, surpassed only by Baldur’s Gate 3 in the estimation of many fans and critics. The original 1999 title is celebrated for its exceptional narrative writing and distinctive, dreamlike setting. Beamdog has built its reputation by preserving and maintaining classic isometric RPGs from BioWare and Black Isle Studios. The failed sequel represents a significant missed opportunity for the genre and franchise, leaving a gap in what could have been an important continuation of a beloved classic.
