Hands On: R-Type Tactics I • II Cosmos - How Does This Turn-Based PSP Pair Hold Up On Switch?
Two classic turn-based strategy titles from the PSP era are making their way to Nintendo Switch through Granzella Inc., a studio founded by former members of Irem’s video game division. R-Type Tactics and its 2009 sequel originally debuted as niche strategy games on Sony’s portable console in 2007 and 2009 respectively, offering a unique tactical spin on the venerable R-Type shoot-em-up franchise.
Irem’s video game division was dissolved in 2011 following Japan’s devastating Tōhoku earthquake, which prompted several key staff members to establish Granzella Inc. Determined to preserve and revisit their most beloved works, the studio secured the R-Type license and has bundled both games together as R-Type Tactics I • II Cosmos for the Switch.
The release represents an interesting case study in game preservation and legacy revival. While the original PSP versions have long been difficult to access, bringing them to modern hardware like the Nintendo Switch introduces these strategy games to a new audience while allowing longtime fans another way to experience the titles. The hands-on preview examines how these turn-based tactical experiences—originally designed for a 4.3-inch portable screen—translate to the hybrid console’s various play modes.
