Will PS6 Be Like a Nintendo Switch? Sony Says Its Next-Gen Console Will Enable ‘A Seamless Experience That Can Be Enjoyed Naturally Beyond the Living Room’

Sony has indicated that its next-generation PlayStation console will support gameplay beyond the living room, potentially featuring a handheld or hybrid form factor similar to the Nintendo Switch.

During a Q&A session with investors, PlayStation chief Hideaki Nishino addressed how Sony plans to win back players who migrated to PC gaming during the COVID-19 pandemic. He stated that while PlayStation has long been associated with home console gaming, the company is working to change this perception. The executive highlighted that the next-gen platform will enable “a seamless experience that can be enjoyed naturally beyond the living room.”

Though no official handheld was announced, the comments strongly suggest Sony is developing either a dedicated portable device or a hybrid console capable of transitioning between docked and portable play modes. This strategy mirrors Nintendo’s successful Switch formula and indicates Sony’s recognition that gaming habits have shifted beyond traditional living room setups.

As part of this broader effort, Sony has also begun releasing PlayStation-branded gaming monitors, signaling its intent to position the brand across multiple gaming environments and platforms. The company faces pressure to innovate with the next generation, particularly given rising component costs that have driven up console prices across the industry, making value propositions increasingly important to consumers.
