Supermassive Games CEO steps down following launch of Directive 8020

Robert Henrysson has announced his resignation as CEO of Supermassive Games, departing the UK studio less than two months after the launch of its latest title, Directive 8020. Henrysson held the CEO position for just over two years, having been appointed in January 2024 after joining the company’s parent organization, Nordisk Games, as a partner in August 2022. He is also stepping down from his role at Nordisk Games.

Supermassive Games is renowned for developing narrative-driven horror experiences, including the Until Dawn franchise, The Quarry, and The Dark Pictures Anthology. In 2022, the studio was fully acquired by Nordisk Games, a subsidiary of the Nordic media conglomerate Egmont Group.

During his tenure, Henrysson guided the studio through significant industry challenges, including two rounds of layoffs. Despite these difficulties, he emphasized accomplishments in his farewell message, highlighting how he broadened the studio’s client base and established a culture of consistent quality. In his LinkedIn announcement, Henrysson described his time with Supermassive as “a very rewarding chapter” and praised the team as “the greatest storytelling game studio on earth.”

Prior to joining Supermassive, Henrysson served as Chairman and interim CEO of Avalanche Studios Group, where he reportedly oversaw the tripling of revenue and profit. His departure comes as he plans to spend the summer with his family, with the timing coinciding closely with Directive 8020’s May 2026 release following the game’s delay.
