Windows 11 just changed the name of Xbox mode (kind of)

Windows 11’s latest Insider build introduces a symbolic branding change: “Xbox mode” has been renamed to “XBOX mode.” This update follows Microsoft’s broader push to standardize the Xbox brand across its platforms and services.

Xbox mode is a relatively new feature, debuting in Windows 11 with the May 2026 Security Update. The naming change reflects a corporate decision rooted in community feedback. Earlier this year, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma conducted a poll on X (formerly Twitter), asking users whether the brand should be Xbox or XBOX. The overwhelming majority voted for the all-caps styling.

Microsoft has begun rolling out the XBOX name across its digital properties. The change is visible on the official XBOX website and social media channels, and the Insider build update suggests this standardization will extend to Windows 11’s interface and feature names.

This rebranding effort creates a more unified brand identity across Microsoft’s gaming ecosystem. While the change may seem cosmetic, consistent branding across products is a strategic priority for major tech companies. The update is currently rolling out through Windows Insider builds and is expected to reach general Windows 11 users in upcoming releases.
