CWA union says Xbox workers are not “disposable” as layoffs loom

The Communications Workers of America (CWA) union has publicly defended Xbox workers ahead of anticipated mass layoffs, rejecting characterizations that staff are expendable. At an online press conference, CWA District 9 Vice President Frank Acre stated that employees “will not be treated as disposable,” while union representatives challenged the financial rationale behind potential job cuts.

Union representatives highlighted that Microsoft has substantial financial resources, pointing to recent Xbox console price increases and citing executive compensation packages as evidence that financial constraints are not the issue. Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, received $96.5 million in compensation for the last financial year. Sherveen Uduwana, a representative for United Video Game Workers, emphasized this disparity in how company resources are allocated.

The statement reflects growing tensions regarding workforce reductions and resource priorities within major publishers. Staff members expressed frustration with the allocation of company funds, with one worker stating, “We’re done paying for executives’ failures.” The union’s position suggests that layoff decisions represent choices about resource distribution rather than financial necessity, as leadership continues to prioritize executive compensation while reducing workforce levels.
