Koei Tecmo’s next project is a new IP that’s just been revealed… by the Japanese government

Koei Tecmo, the Japanese publisher known for franchises including Nioh, Dynasty Warriors, Ninja Gaiden, and Dead or Alive, has been revealed to be developing a new intellectual property codenamed “Fuji.” The project was disclosed through an unusual channel: Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced it as part of the newly launched IP360 Initiative.

The IP360 Initiative, which began in March, is a government program designed to support and grow Japan’s cultural exports, with particular emphasis on the video game industry. A key focus of the program is encouraging the development of new intellectual properties from Japanese studios. Koei Tecmo’s “Fuji” project was selected as one of the initiatives receiving support through this program.

The revelation highlights how Japanese government agencies are actively investing in the country’s game development sector as a strategic cultural export. Rather than being announced through traditional press releases or gaming events, the project’s existence became public knowledge through official government documentation of METI’s supported initiatives. This approach underscores the significance of video game IP development to Japan’s broader cultural and economic strategy.
