Hideo Kojima’s OD Is Reportedly Safe From Upcoming Xbox Cuts
Hideo Kojima’s horror game OD has been confirmed safe from Microsoft’s broader Xbox business restructuring, according to sources familiar with the company’s plans. The game remains in active development at Kojima Productions and will continue to be published by Xbox, even as Microsoft reassesses its overall gaming investments.
The news arrives as Xbox undergoes what Microsoft describes as a “fresh look” at its content investment strategy. While the company maintains it will invest approximately the same amount in games as the previous year, it is redirecting resources to focus on different titles and projects.
Not all games have fared as well in Microsoft’s review. IO Interactive’s upcoming fantasy project—tentatively called “Project Fantasy”—has been cancelled following the end of the publisher’s deal with the development studio. The cancellation prompted IO Interactive to announce layoffs, highlighting the real impact of Microsoft’s strategic recalibration on other studios.
OD, which was first announced during an Xbox showcase in June 2022, remains relatively mysterious, with only brief glimpses of the horror title shown publicly since its reveal. The game is set to feature three actors in its cast, though limited additional details have been shared about its gameplay or story.
The confirmation that OD will proceed despite Xbox’s broader business reset underscores its importance to Microsoft’s publishing strategy. Meanwhile, the cancellation of IO Interactive’s project demonstrates that not all Xbox-backed titles will survive the company’s comprehensive review of its gaming portfolio.
