Surface Go and Surface Laptop Go are dead: Microsoft’s budget Surface PCs are the last to be cut from its portfolio
Microsoft has discontinued its budget-friendly Surface Go and Surface Laptop Go product lines, according to sources familiar with the company’s hardware roadmap. The Surface Go 4 and Surface Laptop Go 3 are no longer being manufactured, with existing inventory out of stock in most retail locations and no plans for restocking or successors.
The discontinuation adds to a growing list of abandoned Surface products, including the Surface Studio, Surface Laptop Studio, Surface Duo, Surface Hub, Surface Book, Surface Headphones, and Surface Earbuds. The Surface Go, which had developed a loyal user base seeking affordable, lightweight tablet-productivity hybrids, represented Microsoft’s attempt to compete in the budget computing market.
This decision reflects a significant strategic shift in Microsoft’s hardware focus, consolidating its product portfolio toward higher-margin or strategically prioritized categories. The move aligns with broader industry trends where major tech companies periodically prune hardware lineups to streamline operations and redirect resources.
For consumers relying on these devices as accessible entry points to the Surface ecosystem, the discontinuation leaves limited affordable options within Microsoft’s current portfolio. The decision raises questions about Microsoft’s future direction in budget hardware segments and whether new product lines might eventually fill the gap left by these beloved but economically challenged devices.
