Report: NBCUniversal could expand into games after Comcast spinoff
Entertainment conglomerate Comcast is planning to spin off NBCUniversal into an independent company, with the separation expected to finalize within approximately one year. Following the split, NBCUniversal—led by newly-appointed CEO Michael Cavanagh—is actively exploring expansion opportunities in the video gaming industry as a growth strategy.
According to Reuters reporting, NBCUniversal is “eyeing opportunities in digital gaming and new entertainment franchises.” Cavanagh stated the company is eager to “explore adjacent businesses where we have the right to play” once independent from Comcast. While no deals are currently locked in, gaming represents one of several growth avenues the company is evaluating.
Comcast has previously demonstrated substantial interest in the gaming sector. CEO Brian Roberts explored acquiring major publishers including Electronic Arts and Activision Blizzard, and considered investing in Fortnite developer Epic Games—though these plans never materialized. Tucker Roberts, the CEO’s son, currently runs Comcast’s gaming division and has expressed enthusiasm for expanding gaming initiatives.
Any potential gaming acquisition by NBCUniversal would not occur until after the official split is completed. The company is positioned to leverage its substantial entertainment IP portfolio and media production capabilities if it enters the gaming space, though it continues evaluating multiple strategic options.
