EA changes Battlefield 6 XP Boosters for the better, only to yet again reveal the change was an error and take it back
Battlefield 6 players are expressing frustration after Battlefield Studios reverted a change to XP Boosters for the second time in three weeks, each time claiming the improvement was made in error.
Patch 1.3.3.0, released June 30 across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, included gunplay updates and a new mode, but also reintroduced an in-game message stating “XP Boost Update: Now Based On In-Game Time.” The change meant XP Boosters would only count down while actively playing matches, rather than in real time as they have since launch.
Since Battlefield 6’s launch, XP boosts have consumed time during matchmaking, loading screens, and periods when players are not in active gameplay. This has long frustrated players, as they effectively waste boosts on non-playable downtime. The change to count down only during matches addresses this frequent complaint and would have removed a significant pain point in the live-service experience.
However, Battlefield Studios quickly reverted the change, stating it was made in error. The problem: this is exactly what happened three weeks earlier in a previous update. Players were initially excited by the same XP Booster improvement, only to see it reversed with identical explanations both times.
The repeated cycle has intensified player frustration, particularly with the method and messaging of the reversions. Many view the pattern as poor communication and decision-making from the development team. Rather than formally implementing a highly requested feature, Battlefield Studios appears to have accidentally introduced it twice, then backed away each time.
The situation reflects broader tension in live-service games between developer intent and player expectations, especially around monetisation systems and quality-of-life improvements. For Battlefield 6 players, the cycle serves as a reminder of how design decisions impact the player experience and how inconsistent implementation can undermine community trust.
