Exodus’ character creator won’t let you totally mess up its protagonist’s “established look” with nose and brow slider chicanery, but you can still pick a beard
Archetype Entertainment’s upcoming sci-fi RPG Exodus takes a restrictive approach to character customization, locking down most of protagonist Jun Aslan’s facial features to maintain his “established look.” Unlike games such as The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion or Mass Effect, which offer extensive slider-based facial customization, Exodus prevents players from significantly altering core facial characteristics including nose shape, brow position, and chin structure.
The design decision reflects a prioritization of character-driven storytelling and visual consistency over the freedom typically associated with character creators. Rather than eliminating customization entirely, Archetype Entertainment preserves player agency through alternative personalization options. Players can still customize hairstyles, select beard options, and apply tattoos to their character, allowing for meaningful visual differentiation while maintaining the developers’ intended narrative identity for Jun Aslan.
This approach contrasts sharply with industry trends toward increasingly detailed character creators, suggesting a deliberate strategy to avoid the unflattering or absurd character models that can result from unrestricted slider-based customization. The Wizards of the Coast-backed studio’s choice represents a philosophical stance that defined protagonists with fixed core features can better support cohesive storytelling than fully customizable blank-slate characters.
